Quick answer: an AI chatbot for your website can answer common questions instantly, day and night, recommend the right service or product and collect leads while you sleep. For a small business it is usually affordable to run. The key is setting it up so it only answers from your approved information and hands tricky questions to a human.

Old website chatbots were frustrating decision trees: press 1 for opening hours, press 2 to give up. Modern AI chatbots actually understand questions. That makes them genuinely useful for small businesses, and also means they need to be set up with care.

What an AI chatbot can do for a small business

  • Answer repeat questions. Prices, opening hours, delivery times, what is included, how to book.
  • Guide visitors. “Which service is right for me?” becomes a short conversation that ends on the right page.
  • Collect leads after hours. Name, email and a short description of what they need, sent straight to your inbox or CRM.
  • Help shoppers. Product suggestions, sizing questions and order status for online stores.
  • Reduce email load. Many clients see fewer “quick question” emails within the first month.

What it should not do

  • Pretend to be a human. Visitors should know they are talking to AI.
  • Give medical, legal or financial advice unless a professional has approved the exact wording.
  • Invent prices, promises or policies.
  • Ask for sensitive information like card numbers or passwords.

How a good chatbot is built

  1. Gather your knowledge. Service pages, FAQs, policies, price lists. If it is not written down, the bot cannot know it.
  2. Set boundaries. The bot answers only from that content and says “I am not sure, let me connect you” otherwise.
  3. Design the handover. A clear button to email, WhatsApp or book a call with a real person.
  4. Match your brand. Colours, tone of voice and a welcome message that sounds like you.
  5. Test with real questions. I use questions from your inbox, including awkward ones.
  6. Review monthly. Read conversations, spot gaps and add missing answers to your website too.

That last step has a nice side effect: the questions visitors ask the bot show you what content your website is missing, which helps your SEO as well.

What it costs

There are two parts. Setup, which covers preparing your content, configuring the bot, designing it and testing. Running costs, which are usually a chatbot platform fee and/or AI usage charged per conversation. For most small businesses the AI usage itself is surprisingly low. I always set usage limits so there are never surprise bills.

Privacy and trust

Tell visitors in your privacy policy that the chat uses AI and what is stored. Choose providers with clear data policies, avoid sending personal details to the AI where possible, and keep conversation logs only as long as you need them. Trust is the whole point of a business website; a chatbot should add to it, not risk it.

Is it worth it for you?

A chatbot makes the most sense if you answer the same questions every day, get a lot of visitors outside working hours, or sell many products. If you get a handful of enquiries a week, a clear FAQ section and a fast contact form may be enough for now.

Beyond the chatbot

AI can also help with smart forms that qualify leads, first drafts of product descriptions, and automations that connect your website to email and booking tools. I wrote about the bigger picture in AI website builder or web designer.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an AI chatbot for a website cost?

Setup by a freelancer usually costs a few hundred dollars depending on how much content and integration is involved. Running costs for a small business are often just a few dollars to a few tens of dollars per month in AI usage, plus any chatbot platform fee.

Will an AI chatbot give wrong answers?

It can if it is not set up carefully. A well built chatbot only answers from content you approve, admits when it does not know, and hands the conversation to a human.

Does an AI chatbot work on WordPress, Shopify and Wix?

Yes. Most chatbots are added with a small script or plugin and work on WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow and custom sites.
