Quick answer: choose custom website development when you need features no plugin or builder offers, when speed is critical, or when your design keeps fighting a template. Choose WordPress or a website builder when you want easy editing and standard features at the lowest cost. Many projects are best as a mix: a custom theme on WordPress.

Clients sometimes ask for “a fully custom website” because it sounds premium. Sometimes that is exactly right. Other times a well built WordPress site would do the job better and cost less to run. Here is how I help people decide.

What “custom” actually means

The word gets used loosely. There are really three levels:

  • Customised template: a ready-made theme with your colours, fonts and content.
  • Custom design on a platform: an original design built as a custom WordPress theme, Shopify theme or Webflow project. This is what most of my clients get.
  • Fully hand-coded: HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP written from scratch, with no content management system unless one is added.

When custom website development is worth it

  • Unique functionality: quote calculators, dashboards, client portals, API integrations or booking logic that plugins cannot handle cleanly.
  • Maximum speed: landing pages for paid ads, where every fraction of a second affects your cost per lead.
  • Distinctive design: interactions and layouts that templates cannot produce without hacks.
  • Security and simplicity: a static site has very little that can be hacked and almost nothing to update.
  • Design to code: you already have a Figma design that needs to be built precisely.

When it is not

  • You want to add pages, posts and products yourself every week
  • Your needs are covered by well known plugins: forms, SEO, booking, ecommerce
  • Your budget is tight and ongoing developer time is not an option

In those cases, WordPress or one of the builders I compared in Wix vs WordPress is often the smarter choice.

Cost and upkeep compared

  • Build: a simple hand-coded site can cost about the same as a WordPress site. Custom features add cost based on complexity.
  • Hosting: static custom sites are often cheaper and faster to host.
  • Updates: fewer security updates than WordPress, but content changes may need a developer unless a CMS is included.
  • Long term: clean, documented code is easy for any developer to pick up. Ask for it in writing.

What to ask a developer

  1. Will I own the source code and the hosting account?
  2. How will I edit text and images?
  3. Is the code documented so another developer could take over?
  4. How will you handle speed, accessibility and SEO basics?
  5. What does hosting cost, and who looks after it?

A common best of both approach

For many businesses I build a custom theme on WordPress: original design and lean code for speed, with the familiar WordPress dashboard for editing. You get most of the benefits of custom development without losing easy content updates. It also keeps the site fast, which matters for speed and Core Web Vitals.

Frequently asked questions

Is a custom-coded website better than WordPress?

Not automatically. Custom code is faster and more flexible, but WordPress is easier to edit and has ready-made plugins. Custom makes sense for unique features or maximum speed.

How much does custom website development cost?

A simple hand-coded marketing site can cost about the same as a WordPress site. Custom features like calculators, portals or integrations add cost depending on complexity.

Can I edit a custom-coded website myself?

Yes, if it is built with a content editor or a headless CMS. Ask for this at the start so text and images are editable without touching code.
