Quick answer: good web design for small businesses starts with one clear goal (calls, bookings, quotes or sales), a short list of pages built around customer questions, real photos and simple words, a platform you can manage yourself, and a plan for what happens after launch. Design comes after those decisions, not before.

When small business owners come to me, they often start with colours and inspiration sites. That is the fun part, but it is not where good websites start. Here is the process I follow with every small business client, so you know what to expect and how to prepare.

Six steps of web design for small businesses from goal to launch
The six steps I follow on every small business website.

Step 1: Set one clear goal

What should a visitor do? Call you, book online, request a quote, buy, or visit your shop? Pick one main action and one backup. Every page will lead towards it.

Step 2: Plan the pages

Most small businesses need fewer pages than they think: a homepage, one page per main service, an About page, proof (reviews, case studies, portfolio) and Contact. Each service page is a chance to show up on Google for that service, so do not lump everything onto one page.

Step 3: Prepare words and photos

This is the step that delays most projects. Write the way you talk to customers. List the questions they ask before buying and answer them. Take real photos of your work, your team and your place of business. If writing is not your thing, it is worth getting help; good copy matters more than any design detail.

Step 4: Design and prototype

I design the mobile version first, because that is where most of your visitors are, then build a clickable prototype you can try before any code is written. This is the time for feedback, when changes are quick and cheap.

Step 5: Build and test

The design is built on the platform that suits you, usually WordPress for flexibility or a builder like Squarespace if you want minimal upkeep. Then everything is tested: forms, speed, phones, tablets, browsers, and basic SEO like titles and descriptions.

Step 6: Launch, measure, improve

After launch, connect Google Search Console and analytics, ask a few customers to try the site, and watch which pages bring enquiries. Small improvements in the first three months often double the results. If you are not sure whether your site is working, read why your website is not converting.

Budget: what to expect

A focused 5 to 8 page site from a freelancer typically costs $500 to $2,500. My own website packages are published with fixed prices. Remember to budget for a domain, hosting and maintenance too.

Who should build it?

A freelancer gives you direct contact and lower costs; an agency gives you a larger team. For most small businesses a good freelancer is the sweet spot. My guide to choosing a small business web designer lists the questions to ask.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Building the site around what you want to say instead of what customers need to know
  • Hiding prices, service areas or contact details
  • Using stock photos instead of your real work
  • No plan for updates and backups after launch
