Quick answer: good small business website design comes down to clarity, trust and speed. Visitors should understand what you do within five seconds, see proof that you are good at it, and find a way to contact you without searching. Everything else is decoration.

I have designed websites for dentists, bakeries, coaches, plumbers, clinics and online shops. The industries are very different, but the websites that bring in customers all share the same ten things. Here they are, in the order I think about them.

1. A homepage that passes the five second test

Show your homepage to someone who does not know your business for five seconds, then ask them what you do and who it is for. If they cannot answer, the headline is not working. “Excellence in every detail” says nothing. “Family dental care in Austin, with evening appointments” says everything.

2. One clear main action

Decide what you want visitors to do most: call, book, request a quote or buy. Make that button stand out and repeat it on every page. Too many equal buttons means people choose none.

3. Design that starts with the phone

On most small business sites I work on, well over half the visitors are on a phone. I design the mobile version first. Big tap targets, short paragraphs, a phone number you can tap, and no pop-up that blocks the whole screen.

4. A page for each main service

One “Services” page with a list of bullet points is a missed opportunity. Each main service deserves its own page that explains who it is for, what is included, what it costs or how pricing works, and common questions. These pages are also what Google and AI assistants show when people search for that service.

5. Real proof

Reviews with full names, photos of real work, logos of clients, video testimonials, years in business, certifications. Stock photos of smiling people in suits do the opposite: visitors have seen them a hundred times and they quietly lower trust.

6. Prices, or at least how pricing works

You do not have to list exact prices, but saying “projects start at” or explaining what affects the cost removes a big reason people leave. I publish my own prices and it has brought in better fitting clients, not fewer.

7. Fast loading

A slow site loses people before they see anything. Compress images, avoid heavy sliders and auto-playing videos, choose decent hosting, and keep plugins to what you actually use. I cover this in detail in my guide to website speed optimization.

8. SEO basics from day one

Each page needs a clear title, a description, one main heading and text that uses the words your customers actually search. Add your business to Google Business Profile and connect Google Search Console. It is much easier to build this in than to add it later. My SEO guide for small businesses walks through it step by step.

9. A contact page that removes friction

Short form, three to five fields, plus phone, email and WhatsApp for people who prefer those. Say how fast you reply. Then test the form yourself every month, because broken forms are the most common silent problem I find in audits.

10. An “about” page with a real person

People buy from people, especially from small businesses. A photo of you, a few honest sentences about why you do what you do, and what working with you is like. This is often the second most visited page on the site.

Template or custom design?

A well chosen template is fine for a first website or a tight budget. A custom design is worth it when your competitors all look the same and you need to stand out, or when your business has specific needs a template fights against. Either way, the ten points above matter more than the theme.

What small business website design costs

With a freelancer, a 5 to 8 page site typically costs $500 to $2,500. I explain the full picture in how much does a website cost. If you are choosing a platform at the same time, Wix vs WordPress is worth a read.

Frequently asked questions

How many pages does a small business website need?

Most small businesses do well with 5 to 8 pages: home, services (or one page per main service), about, reviews or work, contact, and a privacy policy. Add a blog if you plan to write regularly.

What makes a good small business website?

It explains what you do and who it is for within five seconds, loads fast on a phone, shows proof like reviews, and makes it very easy to contact or buy from you.

Should a small business use a template or a custom design?

A good template is fine for a tight budget or a first site. A custom design is worth it when your market is competitive and you need to look clearly different and more trustworthy than others.
