Quick answer: choose Shopify if you want the simplest way to run a store and are happy to pay a monthly fee for it. Choose WooCommerce if you want full control, already use WordPress, sell content-heavy or unusual products, or want to avoid platform fees. Both are excellent; the right one depends on how you want to run your business.

I build stores on both platforms, so I have no reason to push you towards one. What I have noticed is that people usually pick based on what a friend uses, then discover the trade-offs a year later. Let me save you that year.

The short version

  • Ease of use: Shopify wins. Everything lives in one dashboard and hosting, security and updates are handled for you.
  • Flexibility: WooCommerce wins. You can change almost anything, from checkout fields to how products are displayed.
  • Cost structure: Shopify is a predictable monthly fee plus apps. WooCommerce is hosting plus extensions plus someone keeping it updated.
  • Content and SEO: WooCommerce has the edge, because WordPress is still the best platform for blogs and content pages.
  • Getting started quickly: Shopify, especially if you have a small catalogue and no developer.

Cost: what you really pay

Shopify charges a monthly subscription, and most stores add a few paid apps for reviews, subscriptions, upsells or filters. Apps are where costs quietly grow. Payment processing fees apply too, and are higher if you use an outside payment provider instead of Shopify Payments.

WooCommerce itself is free. You pay for hosting (good ecommerce hosting matters), premium extensions for specific features, and maintenance, either your time or a care plan. Over a year, the totals for a small store are often closer than people expect.

Ease of running the store

Shopify is built for merchants. Adding products, processing orders and managing stock feels smooth, and the mobile app is excellent. You rarely need a developer for day-to-day work.

WooCommerce is also easy once it is set up well, but you are responsible for updates and hosting. If updates are ignored for months, things break. With a good setup and a bit of regular care, it runs happily for years.

Design and flexibility

Both platforms have beautiful themes. Shopify themes are polished but work within Shopify’s structure, and deeper changes need Liquid coding. WooCommerce lets you customise nearly everything, including complex product options, B2B pricing, bookings, memberships and multilingual shops.

SEO and content

If you plan to grow through Google with guides, recipes, tutorials or a blog, WooCommerce gives you more room. Shopify handles product SEO basics well, but its blog and URL structure are more limited. For many small stores, either will rank well if the product pages are written properly and the site is fast. My SEO guide for small businesses covers the basics that apply to both.

Which I recommend, by situation

  • First store, under 100 products, no technical help: Shopify
  • Already on WordPress with good traffic: WooCommerce, so you keep your content and SEO in one place
  • Complex products, custom pricing or bookings: WooCommerce
  • Selling fast, dropshipping or trying an idea: Shopify
  • Tight monthly budget, happy to maintain: WooCommerce

What makes either platform sell

The platform matters less than people think. Stores that sell have clear product photos, honest descriptions that answer questions, visible shipping costs, reviews, and a checkout without surprises. A beautiful store on the “wrong” platform will outsell a messy store on the “right” one every time.

Moving between them

If you picked one and it no longer fits, you can migrate. Products, customers and orders can move across. The key step is setting up redirects from old product addresses so Google does not lose track of you.

Still not sure?

Tell me what you sell, how many products you have and who will run the store day to day, and I will recommend a platform honestly. You can read more about how I build Shopify and WooCommerce stores, see my online store package, or send me a message directly.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify or WooCommerce cheaper?

WooCommerce has no monthly platform fee, but you pay for hosting, some extensions and maintenance. Shopify starts at a monthly fee plus app costs. For small stores the yearly totals are often similar; the difference is how you pay and who does the upkeep.

Which is better for SEO, Shopify or WooCommerce?

Both can rank well. WooCommerce gives you more control over URLs, structured data and content because it runs on WordPress. Shopify covers the basics well but is less flexible for content-heavy SEO.

Can I switch from Shopify to WooCommerce later?

Yes. Products, customers and orders can be migrated either way. The important part is redirecting old product URLs so you keep your Google rankings.
